Kai was one of three doctoral researchers funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg (MWK) within the 3R-US project, which aims to sustainably anchor the 3R principles (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) in research at the University of Stuttgart and, through the 3R-Network BW, across the Baden-Württemberg research landscape.
After completing both his Bachelor’s and Master’s studies at the University of Stuttgart at the Institute of Cell Biology and Immunology (IZI), Kai pursued his doctoral research at the Institute for Biomaterials and Biomolecular Systems (IBBS) under the supervision of Michael Heymann. His PhD work was conducted in close collaboration with Monilola Olayioye and Roland Kontermann (IZI), reflecting the interdisciplinary spirit of the 3R-US initiative.
Kai’s research focused on the development of advanced 3D bioprinting approaches to model complex tumor and tissue microenvironments in vitro, providing innovative and 3R-compliant alternatives for biomedical research. Publications arising from this work are currently in preparation and are eagerly anticipated.
