In the latest session of the 3R-Kompetenzkolloquium NRW, Prof. Monilola Olayioye presented the talk “Ex Vivo Tumor Slice Cultures: A Platform for Personalized Cancer Therapy”, showcasing several collaborative 3R-BioMedicUS projects in the field of cancer research.
The presentation highlighted our recent publication, “BCL-xL as a therapeutic target in cetuximab-refractory colorectal cancer”, which demonstrated how patient-derived tumor slice cultures can help identify new therapeutic strategies for colorectal cancers that no longer respond to standard treatments. This work was carried out in collaboration with the Robert Bosch Center for Tumor Diseases (RBCT) and the Institute for Clinical Pharmacology (IKP) in Stuttgart, Charles River Laboratories and the University of Freiburg.
The presented work showcased the potential of ex vivo tumor slice cultures as human-relevant research platforms that can bridge basic and translational research while contributing to the Replacement, Reduction and Refinement (3R) of animal experiments.
We thank the organizers of the 2026 3R-Kompetenzkolloquium NRW for the opportunity to present the diverse cancer research activities within 3R-BioMedicUS.
